En l’an 9 après J.-C, le général romain Publius Quinctilius Varus et les 17ème, 18ème et 19ème légions ont été pris en embuscade en Germanie. 15 000 Romains sont entrés dans la Forêt de Teutoburg. Pas un n’en est sorti. La défaite de Varus a été aussi stupéfiante que la victoire de Scipio sur Carthage (le sujet de notre dernier panorama) et a profondément déstabilisé l'empire.
