L’objectif est de faire progresser ses élèves dans chaque matière (maths, français, sciences...), souvent contre leur gré...
Le jeu se déroule en tour par tour à la manière d'un RPG tactique, laissant tout son temps au joueur pour réfléchir et peaufiner sa stratégie. Il peut activer des capacités spéciales ciblant un ou plusieurs élèves, utiliser des objets ou faire appel à un super-pouvoir (une seule fois par cours).
Chaque élève qui progresse rapporte de l'expérience permettant d'améliorer ses capacités ou de débloquer de nouveaux super-pouvoirs.
Teacher Story est en grande partie inspiré de faits réels, avec quelques interprétations "personnelles".
Barry Leitch, véritable légende du jeu vidéo avec plus de 240 titres sonorisés à son actif, est l'auteur de la musique du trailer et composera les musiques de Teacher Story.
